Im a Trumpet player and wanted to expand my Brass instrument resume so i bought a bit of a beater French horn to practice on. The third valve was very resistive so I decided to take the horn apart and give the rotary valves a good scrubbing on the inside with soapy water. Anyways got the instrument all put back together and the valves strung back up but im having issues getting the horn to play a scale or arpeggios with a fingering chart in front of me. What i did notice is that when i pull some of the tuning slides out while having the valve pressed it still pops like there is air pressure. On other when i pull it out there is no pop.
Is it possible one of the valves are backwards even though it lets air and sound through the instrument? (I know on trumpet it wont play if a valve is backwards.
The Single F Horn is a very common horn. It can be distinguished by having only three valves and levers. The total length is around 12 feet and can easily play the lower range of the horn. An easy way to distinguish it from the Single Bb Horn is that the valve tubes are longer, therefore, the 1st and 3rd valve slides have bends in them.
Any help would be appreciated. Perhaps the slides are so out of tune im just struggling to hone in on the notes?
